I earned my undergraduate degree in biology from General Savannah State University. Upon graduation I had the opportunity to work for the CDC as a research division with a focus on influenza. I began teaching high school science courses in 2009 in Atlanta, and I recently returned to school to become a registered nurse. I believe my real world experience in the fields of science and education have given me invaluable resources to help those students I work with. Some of the courses I tutor include high school and college level biology, microbiology, life sciences, ecology, science, middle school math, and algebra 1. As a teacher I quickly discovered just how different the learning process is for students. Some students learn better by listening to the information while others need to read it or interact with it in a physical way before they are able to assimilate the information and gain true mastery of the concepts. I believe it is important to discover the learning method prior to making any learning plans for a student so that those plans are designed specifically for the students academic needs and learning style. For that reason, no two tutoring sessions are ever the same.

I earned my undergraduate degree in communicative sciences and my graduate degree in elementary education. I am an experienced elementary school teacher, but I have received a reading endorsement that allows me to teach reading to all grade levels. I additionally have a great deal of experience working with students who have varying levels of hearing loss. I currently tutor elementary math, reading, and English for all grade levels. I additionally work with students who are preparing for a variety of standardized exams, including the ISEE, SSAT, and MAP. I am passionate about working with students to help them develop an innate love of learning and reading. Part of this involves getting to know the student and discovering their unique learning style. Many students don’t realize that they may have a different learning style that needs different types of academic input to make learning more accessible. Tutoring gives an educator ample time to discover this for each student, which is one of the many reasons I so enjoy being a tutor. It also gives each student the time and attention they need to bring their skills up to grade level so they can thrive in a classroom setting. I enjoy helping students on this journey and watching as their confidence in themselves begins to soar.

I became fluent in Spanish as an exchange student. I spent a year in Ecuador before heading to college. I attended Davidson College, where I had the opportunity to serve as a teaching assistant for the Spanish department on campus. In that role, I worked with undergraduate students to help them with Spanish language learning as well is in their studies of Latin American culture. As a college junior, I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain, helping me develop an appreciation for the origins of the Spanish language. I have experience working as an interpreter between Spanish and English. I’m looking forward to share what I know with others to help them become successful Spanish-language speakers. When I have free time, I enjoy running, swimming, painting, writing, riding my bike, drinking coffee, and ceramics.
